The Crabs backed the Herrings off the brink, last evening, taking each — also all — of the four points contested at the L. and A. bowling alleys in the Ariel League. As the Smelts and Sharks were splitting even about that time the Crabs went into a tie for the lead with the Smelts. Instead, the PUC has ordered the Maine Central Railroad and the City of Lewiston to remove brush along the track right-of-way. The state will pay half the municipal cost. MCRR was ordered to install a reflectorized crossbuck sign, also at its own expense. Ward One Alderman Bronson C. Moore had led the fight for automatic warning signals and the Board of Aldermen, at his request, asked the PUC to order them installed by the railroad. The crossing was termed dangerous by the alderman who pointed out there have been vehicle-train collisions there in recent months.

Jimmy’s Restaurant, the Minot Avenue eatery that started as a diner in the 1920s, will close today because of high property taxes and a road widening project last summer that kept customers away, owner Rick DiPompo said Tuesday. The restaurant closed last week, but its lounge remains open until tonight. The business had employed up to 120 full- and part-time people.

The interior of the restaurant was nearly bare Tuesday, except for stacks of chairs, a couple of tables and a half empty pot of still-warm coffee.

“We had the finest buffet in the country here, with the exception of Las Vegas,” said DiPompo. “Sixty feet of food.”
