GREENE — Police said speed is partly the reason for a Route 202 wreck Friday night that sent three young men to the hospital.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that speed is definitely a factor and alcohol is under investigation,” Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Rielly Bryant said.

Shane Dorothy, 23, of College Road in Greene and two male passengers ages 18 and 16 were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Dorothy’s 2007 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck went off Route 202 near Richard Street and struck a tree.

The 16-year-old was later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

All three were in serious condition on Monday, Bryant said.

Bryant said the accident was called in to police by a witness. Dorothy passed the witness on the road before he failed to negotiate a curve at about 11:06 p.m., the detective said. It appears none of the three were wearing seat belts and one of the passengers was partially ejected through the windshield, he said.

“Eventually we think we will be able to attach a speed,” Bryant said. “But right now, we can see that it was high speed because of the extent of the damage that we’ve seen.”

The accident is under investigation, Bryant said, and the Lewiston Police Department’s accident reconstruction team is helping the Sheriff’s Office.

“We are at the beginning of this investigation,” Bryant said. “There is a lot more we have to do. Upon completion, it will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for a review for possible criminal charges.”
