MINOT — Selectmen on Tuesday came to agreements with two property owners who had forfeited their properties Jan. 15 because they had failed to pay their property taxes for 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Until recently, town officials had been unsuccessful in their attempts to contact the owner of the property at 694 West Minot Road, Map 5, Lot 15.
Selectmen voted to direct Town Administrator Arlan Saunders to prepare a quitclaim deed, returning the town’s interest to the owner on receipt of the $593 owed in back taxes. The owner, present at the meeting, handed over a check with the assurance that Saunders would process the quitclaim deed on Wednesday.
Selectmen also reached an agreement with the owner of two properties on Woodman Hill Road, at Map 6, Lots 9A and 9B, whereby the owner will be given 90 days to pay the $14,858 owed in back taxes and, having received same, the town will provide quitclaim deeds returning the town’s interest in the properties.
Selectman Eda Tripp told the board that the action settled accounts with two of the eight property owners whose properties the town had acquired on Jan. 15.
Having discussed the other tax-acquired properties, selectmen directed Saunders to proceed immediately with title searches on two of them in preparation for putting them out to bid.
Selectmen took no action on the remaining properties.
Tripp told the board that property taxes for 2014 are still owed on 45 properties and property taxes for 2015 are still owed on 159 properties.
The total amount of property taxes due the town stands at $308,086.
In other business, selectmen authorized Saunders to post town roads when he and highway supervisor Scott Parker deem it necessary.
Selectman Dan Gilpatric noted that it appeared, thanks to Tuesday’s rain and high temperatures, that Wednesday would be none too soon to post the roads.
Saunders told the board that, following a “self-inspection” of the town’s ball fields and trail system, as required by the Maine Department of Conservation, the current signage is insufficient and he is ordering five signs to be replaced.
Selectmen agreed to begin their next meeting, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 29, at 6 p.m. in order to take a tour of the town’s Central Fire Station and the Orchard Station, to review progress on additions at both locations.
