Packing four skiers into the top ten positions, Mt. Blue raced past Falmouth, 66-110, for the girls’ title, while the Cougar boys crammed four skiers into the top 12 spots to outdistance Leavitt, 66-105.

Gabrielle Farrell of Falmouth won the individual Class A championship, cruising the hilly course in 14 minutes, 27.1 seconds. Jennifer Wilbraham of Morse was second in 14:56.9, followed by Lena Martin, of Brunswick, at 14:58.6.

The Cougars, however, dominated the remainder of the top ten finishers, headed by Meghan Charles (4th), with all four of the Mt. Blue skiers finishing within 36 seconds of each other. Miriam Cohen (8th), Grace Andrews (9th) and Kayla White (10th) provided the 44 point margin of victory in winning the Class A girls’ title.

“It’s all about supporting each other as a team in an individual sport,” Cohen said. “We are always thinking about passing the girls ahead of us to help the team.”

“Winning, today, means a lot to us,” she added. “We are really excited about standing on the podium and getting a ribbon.”

Additionally, the Mt. Blue girls were awarded the Maine Principals’ Association Class A Nordic sportsmanship banner.

Mt. Blue’s 39-point win in the boys’ overall Nordic championship was equally impressive.

Fueled by the inspired skiing of Tucker Barber, the Cougars managed to extend it’s 10-point day one lead over Leavitt, which battled hard to finish ahead of Falmouth, 105-106, for second place.

“Every person on our team knows that it’s a two-point swing for every skier we can pass,” Barber said. “We ended up just going for it.”

Barber placed second behind Portland’s Brad Ravenelle, who toured the course in 12:05.0 to claim the freestyle state championship by nine seconds. The pair switched positions from the day before when Barber won the classical race and Ravenelle was second.

“I thought I had a good chance of getting into the top spots,” Barber said. “I attacked the hills pretty hard and finished strong.”

Jarod Farrar continued his run of exceptional races, finishing third for Leavitt.

FARMINGTON — Luca DeAngelis and Kaelyn Woods continued to dominate Class B Nordic ski competition Friday at Titcomb Mountain, winning individual state titles in freestyle races.

DeAngelis, of Maranacook, and Woods, of Gray-New Gloucester, ran away with the classical titles on Thursday before adding quality wins in freestyle on Friday.

DeAngelis employed a time-tested strategy on the hills at Titcomb Mountain to turn in a spectacular time of 11:49, just ahead of Yarmouth’s John Lane at 12:00.

“The course was really fast, so I decided to push as hard as I could on the last big hill and then cruise down hill the rest of the way,” DeAngelis said. “The downhills were getting a little tricky, I almost fell once, but I was pretty psyched to finish the race.”

After the top finishers crossed the line, Freeport started to show it’s strength, placing four skiers in the next six positions (3-4-6-8) to win the Class B boys’ state championship. Freeport beat second place Caribou 43-82, with Maranacook third at 91 points.

Bennett Hight paced the Freeport surge finishing third in 12:35. Yacob Olins was fourth, Kyle Dorsey sixth and Nathan Smail eighth.

Mt. Abram’s Vernon Romanoski was ninth.

The Caribou boys won the Class B Nordic sportsmanship banner.

Woods, the defending Nordic champion, left everything she had on the course, blistering the hills in 13:01 to finish ahead of second-place finisher Lily Johnston, of Freeport, 13:43.3.

“It was a super fast course that was in really good condition,” Woods said. “I was really pushing to defend my title. My focus was on skiing the transitions really worked.”

In a superb team battle, Yarmouth edged Maranacook, 41-65, to win the Class B girls’ Nordic state championship.

Friday, Yarmouth, led by Lucy Alexander in third, took spots 3-5 while Maranacook logged in with finishers in 6-8, but it was a ninth-place finish by Yarmouth’s Lydia Sullivan that secured the freestyle and overall title for the Clippers, when the Black Bears’ fourth skier came in 12th.

Laura Parent led the strong team race for Maranacook with a sixth place.
