SABATTUS — Personnel from Sabattus Fire and emergency medical services were honored at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting and two new officers announced for the Police Department.

Fire Chief Marc Veilleux presented Lt. Tony Siderio with the Fire Officer of the Year award, Matt Conde the Firefighter of the Year award, Jennifer Campbell the EMS Responder of the Year award and Austin Gayton the Junior Firefighter of the Year Award.

Austin also received the National Junior Volunteer Firefighter Presidential Award for his many hours of volunteerism.

Officer Sheila Weatherbee has been appointed detective sergeant, effective Feb. 22. She has had a three-year assignment as a special investigator to high-intensity drug trafficking areas. Her law enforcement career spans 15 years, including serving in Yarmouth and Cumberland.

Town Manager Tony Ward announced that Shawn Kelly, a full-time police officer for Lisbon, accepted a reserve position in Sabattus. Kelly will fill open shifts and other assignments.

The board discussed Lisbon’s proposal to increase the cost of dispatch services to Sabattus. Fire calls would go from $2.70 per capita to $3, increasing the annual expenditure by $1,463, for a total of $14,628.

The proposal also increases police dispatch services from $6.61 per capita to $8, or from $32,230 to $39,008 annually. The board agreed to present Lisbon with a counteroffer with a lower rate.

The board appointed Patricia William to a one-year term, and Joshua Martin to a two-year term,  on the Budget Committee. There is still one vacancy and anyone interested is asked to contact the town hall.

Negotiations with Teamsters Local No. 340 and Public Works continue and Ward said he is hoping to have a contract this week.

The town hall furnace malfunctioned this past weekend and except for a few frozen pipes there was no damage, Ward said.

The board will hold a public workshop on town growth at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Town Hall.

The next selectmen meeting is Tuesday, March 1, when Ward will present his 2016-17 budget.
