MECHANIC FALLS — Two people were taken to a Lewiston hospital Friday night after their cars collided head-on Route 26.
Police said Timothy Richardson, 22, of South Paris, was driving north on Route 26 when his Saturn and a Nissan Versa driven by Tara Elliott, 40, of New Hampshire collided.
Richardson’s car then struck a curb and went airborne, police said, sailing roughly 20 feet before striking a tree.
When emergency crews responded to the 6 p.m. wreck, they found Richardson in the roadway. It was not clear, police said, whether he’d been ejected or if he’d crawled out of the wreckage.
Richardson was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a possible concussion, police said. Elliott was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash was being investigated by Mechanic Falls police Officer James Daigle, who said there were conflicting accounts of what caused the crash near the intersection with Lane Road.
The passenger’s side of Richardson’s Saturn appeared to have been ripped from the vehicle. Elliott’s small 4-door sustained mostly front-end damage.
Police shut down a stretch of Route 26 as emergency vehicles responded.
With a section of the roadway closed down, motorists were rerouted onto Lane Road, resulting in traffic snarls on Route 26 and Route 121.
A section of Route 26 remained closed for about an hour before police opened one lane to traffic.
Mechanic Falls police were continuing to investigate the wreck later Friday night.
