Alexandrah Gagne-Robertson, left, of Leeds and Brock Boutin of Turner, tear across Little Wilson Pond in Turner during a Daytona 500 get-together on Sunday. Dave Sheloske has hosted a party on ice for over 30 years to kick off the start of the NASCAR racing season. “It started out as a Daytona 500 skating party for my daughter,” said Sheloske, who lives on the pond. Now that Sheloske’s daughter, Beckie, is 36, motorcycles and modified lawn tractors have replaced ice skates. Sunday’s ice was at least a foot deep but very wet because of the warm winter. Many party regulars stayed away because of the poor ice conditions. “This has been one of the most challenging winters,” Sheloske said. “Last year, we had 30 inches of ice,” said Don Blanchard Jr. of Turner. Gagne-Robertson and Boutin are freshmen at Leavitt Area High School. Go to sunjournal.com to watch a video of Daytona on ice.
