PORTLAND (AP) — The mother of the 23-year-old Maine man whose body was pulled from the water in Portland after he disappeared New Year’s Day said she’s relieved her family’s long wait is over.
Portland police on Saturday tentatively identified the body as that of James Dyer, of Saco, who was last seen by friends as they all left a nightclub in Portland’s Old Port early Jan. 1. When his friends turned around, Dyer was gone. Police say his family and friends had no contact with him from that point on.
His mother, Amy Dyer, told the Portland Press Herald (bit.ly/1QtQS3y) she knew her son was likely dead, but the uncertainty remained.
An autopsy is being done to determine the cause of death and confirm the identity.
“Right now, it doesn’t look like there were any signs of foul play, so that’s good,” Amy Dyer said. “I hope that remains the case.”
The body was spotted Saturday morning near DiMillo’s Marina on Commercial Street. Police blocked off the area with crime scene tape and divers recovered the body at about noon.
Amy Dyer said she and her family can now move forward with funeral arrangements.
