1944 – 2016

MEXICO — Henry “Butch” Mowatt, 71, of Mexico, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with his daughters by his side.

Butch, as he was known to many, was born in Portland, on Sept. 15, 1944, being the second child of Hartley and Barbara Mowatt.

Butch had an early calling to join the U.S. Army at a young age, and reached the rank of SSgt., E6, with time in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. In between his last tour of Vietnam and a long tour of Germany, he met his wife, Vicky E. Watts, and raised his loving daughters, Bernice and Marie. Butch ended up with close to 20 years of valiant service to the U.S. Army, obtaining many medals of honor including the Purple Heart and Silver Service Star. Upon returning to the United States, Butch resumed his hardworking and dedicated career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired in 1996.

Butch also was a chaplain at the VFW post in Rumford.

There wasn’t much that Butch didn’t like to do, but his favorites were hunting, fishing, coin collecting, reading, and especially any time spent with his granddaughter, Isabelle, whether it was buying ice cream or just hanging out and doting on her. It’s been said: “He had the best makeovers ever” with her.

He is survived by his loving children, Bernice C. Westleigh, and her husband, Nathan, of Hebron, and Marie E. Mowatt, with granddaughter, Isabelle V. Mowatt, of Mexico. Another great joy of Butch’s was his large family of sisters, Judy, Beverly, Janice, Deborah, Eileen, Cindy; and brothers, Michael (Moe,) Mark, Hartley (Skip,) and Wayne. Butch also has many upon many nieces and nephews who loved and adored him.

Butch is predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Gerry Debelak.

The Mowatt family at this time would like to thank the loving staff of Togus Springs Hospice and Palliative Care for their sensitive, professional and compassionate efforts through our difficult time.
