LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society will feature a talk by Cherie Garnett of the Lisbon Recreation Department titled “Alaska: Off Grid and Sled Dogs” Wednesday, March 9.
She will talk about what it’s like to live in the Fairbanks area of Alaska off grid (no commercial electric power) and dry cabin (no running water). She recently returned from her fourth trip to Alaska, visiting her son who operates a sled dog kennel, both for racing and for tourist trips in the Alaska wilderness.
Garnett has many pictures of the spectacular scenery, especially around Denali National Park, home of Mt. Denali, the highest peak in the U.S. She says she loves the style of living and the spectacular scenery in the wilds of northern Alaska.
On her last visit, she helped her son prepare for the Yukon Quest, a 1,000-mile sled dog challenge, second only to the famous historic Alaska Iditarod race. She will also talk about Mary Shields, the first woman ever to finish the Iditarod.
The presentation is free and open to the public. The society meeting rooms are in the MTM Center on School Street. Parking and entrance are at the rear of the building. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the program at 7 p.m.
