LEWISTON — A dog died, but a man escaped a fire that destroyed a mobile home at 160 Hackett Mills Road on Sunday evening.

A neighbor spotted smoke and pulled a man from the bedroom of the home, Deputy Chief Tom Printup said Monday. The neighbor’s 911 call reached the Fire Department shortly after 5 p.m.

Printup said the 1950 mobile home with an addition was a total loss.

The resident was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of smoke inhalation. The man was fully recovered when released.

“It was more of a precautionary transport,” Printup said.

A cat that lived in the mobile home was reported missing, but later found by homeowner Deborah Riguette.

The preliminary cause of the fire is believed to be a kerosene heater in a living room-type area, Printup said, according to the homeowner’s statements. An investigation is continuing.
