OXFORD — Oxford Plains Speedway received approval of a mass gathering permit from selectmen Thursday night for the 2016 racing season.

The approval came in two votes: one for the regular season and one for the Oxford 250 race. The vote was accompanied by discussion on whether Oxford Rescue EMTs would provide services for the 250 race.

“We definitely would use the town for the 250 event,” Oxford Plains Speedway Vice President Mike Mayberry said. “The only thing we were looking at and discussed some was it’s getting difficult to staff (emergency medical personnel.) So we are looking at the potential of having our own at some point, but we’re definitely starting this year with the town rescue, and we’re going to go from there. If it works, good — but if it becomes difficult to staff, we’re looking into doing our own.”

One Oxford EMT expressed disappointment that police officers working the Oxford 250 are paid a higher rate than the EMTs.

In other business, selectmen approved a permit for Norway-Paris Fish and Game Club to hold its third annual gun and sports show at the Oxford County Fairgrounds from May 20-22.

An application for a pawnbroker’s license renewal for Pa’s Trading Post was approved.

Selectman Scott Hunter requested a brake check for town highway department trucks.

Selectman Pete Laverdiere expressed concern about a washout on Oxford Street near Route 26. He said the washout was created by runoff from the nearby Paris Farmers Union parking lot.

Interim Town Manager Rodney Smith said the officials at the business said they would check with their attorney “to see if they can get an easement to get in there and effect some repairs.” The washout is on property owned by another party.

A resident repeated his inquiry from the March 3 selectmen meeting concerning the whereabouts of a monetary donation from The Lost Gull restaurant for the Fire Department.

Selectman Scott Owens said he would “find out tomorrow.”

Selectmen approved paying the $357,854 tax bill from Oxford County.

The board unanimously voted to deny a request for a property tax abatement from a resident.

Selectmen hold a work session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the Town Hall to review the proposed employee behavior policy and other town business. Residents are invited to attend but will not be allowed to participate.

A special town meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Oxford Elementary School to vote on ordinances for recreational vehicle zoning, recreational vehicle accessory enclosures, medical marijuana registered dispensaries and or cultivation facilities, and outdoor lighting regulation.
