FARMINGTON — Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Mt. Blue High School Bjorn Auditorium.
The Wilton Group is organizing the benefit concert and Western Maine Play Museum is sponsoring the group. All donations benefit Western Maine Play Museum.
Although Pihcintu is based in Portland, the young women come from Cambodia, China, Congo, El Salvador, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, Vietnam, British West Indies and Zambia. Many of these girls come from war-torn villages, refugee camps and places where famine and political turmoil were devastating realities. The chorus also includes girls whose families have been here for generations, and they have formed a powerful and permanent bond.
The name “Pihcintu” comes from the Passamaquoddy word meaning “when she sings, her voice carries far.”
The group performs under the direction of award-winning producer, musician and songwriter Con Fullam. It received national recognition and performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., for World Refugee Day at the request of the United Nations.
