FARMINGTON — A program on “Pond Construction and Maintenance” will be offered from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Farmington Municipal Building downstairs conference room.
Anyone who would like to build or renovate an existing pond for stocking fish, for calling wildlife or to enhance property is invited to have questions answered.
Contractor recertification credits are available to those attending the full session. Noncredit people will be dismissed at break time.
Candi Gilpatric, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service civil engineer, and Bobby VanRiper, Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist, will discuss the importance of oxygen levels and temperature for fish health along with other biology-type information such as algae and cattails. Questions will be answered.
Department of Environmental Protection regulations will be covered after break and there will be a presentation on “Dirt and Water.”
Each participant will leave with a “Ponds – Planning, Design, Construction” handbook plus new knowledge about ponds. The new DEP pocket field guide will be available on request.
Preregistration is required. Cost will be $50 or recertification and $25 for noncredit. Payment should be made to the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District, 107 Park St., Farmington, ME 04938.
