PORTLAND — A Rhode Island man pleaded guilty Monday to traveling across state lines for sexual relations with a Bridgton teen.

According to a written statement issued by U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II, William McNeill, 23, of Cumberland, R.I., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to traveling in interstate commerce to engage in sexual conduct with a minor.

According to court documents, in the fall of 2014, McNeill met a 14-year-old girl from Cumberland County online. On about Oct. 18, 2014, following several weeks of communication with the juvenile in a sexually explicit manner, McNeill traveled from North Carolina to Maine to meet and have sexual relations with her.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury on Oct. 21, 2015 and arrested in Massachusetts on Nov. 3, 2015.

McNeill faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.

The case resulted from a joint investigation between the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bridgton Police Department.
