NEW GLOUCESTER – No one was hurt, but a Friday evening blaze on Morse Road destroyed a house and garage, causing nearly a half million dollars in damage before the flames were snuffed out.

Fire crews went to 454 Morse Road at about 6 p.m. after neighbors reported a two-car garage was on fire. Shortly after the fire was reported, it spread from the garage to the second and third floors of the Cape-style home, officials said.

New Gloucester was assisted by Gray, Windham, Auburn, Poland, Durham, North Yarmouth and Pineland Security in battling the blaze. Roughly 15,000 gallons of water were dumped on the flames before the fire was subdued, officials said.

Homeowners were credited with closing the door between the house and garage, which slowed the fire and allowed their escape, according to officials.

The home, garage and contents are a complete loss with an approximate value of $450,000.

New Gloucester Fire and Rescue will meet with Fire Marshals Monday, and more information will be available at that time.
