BUCKFIELD — Bids to fix the front entrance of the Zadoc Long Free Library and add three more parking spaces are due Wednesday, April 13, Town Manager Cindy Dunn said recently.

Specifications for the work were sent to contractors March 12, and six contractors visited the library at 5 Turner St. on March 28, she said.

“I will be bringing the results to the board on your meeting on (April 19),” she told selectmen at a recent meeting. “The way the spring is going, I think we’ll have this done sooner than later.”

“Well I am not going to count our chickens before they hatch,” Board of Selectmen Chairwoman Cheryl Coffman said.

“That’s probably wise,” Dunn said.

“It’s Maine and it’s still early,” Coffman said.

The work includes covering the lower set of stairs at the front of the building, removing the cement columns from the middle landing and replacing them with wrought-iron railings. The railing would go down the middle of the stairs, which would be repaired where needed, and surfaced with nonskid material.

The Loring Hill Road side of the library will be excavated to create three new parking spaces. Other work includes building a walkway from the parking spaces to the front entrance and a walkway from the current parking spaces to the side entrance. The large shrub on the left side of the building is slated to be removed and a new sign hung on the front of the library.

The budget for the work is $7,500.
