AUBURN — A Rumford man was indicted Tuesday on charges that he robbed a mother and daughter from Canton outside the Auburn Mall in February.

Mark Sinclair, 22, formerly of Peru, was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on two charges of robbery. One of those felony charges is punishable by up to 30 years in prison; the other, 10 years.

He also was charged with misdemeanor assault and violation of condition of release.

A 17-year-old boy from Auburn was identified as an accomplice. He was charged with felony criminal conspiracy to commit robbery.

According to a police report, Sinclair snatched the purse of Lili-Anne Tyler, 16, of Canton after knocking her to the ground in the mall parking lot.

The impact cut the teen’s knee. She had $10 and personal items in her purse, Detective Eric Bell wrote in a sworn statement.

Sinclair had fled the scene in a tan Volvo that had been reported stolen in Lewiston. The car was found a day later parked behind the Rite Aid on Main Street in Lewiston, Bell wrote.

Two days after that, Sinclair and a juvenile were stopped while driving a different stolen vehicle.

The juvenile told police he had driven the Volvo during the mall robbery, Bell wrote. The juvenile said Sinclair had used a fake knife while committing that robbery.

The juvenile said he and Sinclair had thrown the girl’s purse in a gravel lot near St. Phillips Church.

Sinclair told police he had stolen the purse at the request of the juvenile. He said he had worn a black hoodie and he had tied a red bandanna over the lower portion of his face. The juvenile had given him both items, he said.

Tyler said she and her mother, Jillette Tyler, had been returning to their car from shopping at the mall when a man exited a nearby bar and ran up to her, demanding that she give him her purse. She dropped her other bags, but tried to hold on to her purse, she had said.

Sinclair is at Androscoggin County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Friday at Androscoggin County Superior Court.
