LEWISTON — With limited curbside collections for bulky waste this spring in Lewiston and Auburn, there are still options for residents looking to unload.

Both cities allow residents to take bulky items, such as mattresses, furniture and construction debris to their respective waste stations.

Lewiston is offering free dumping for bulky waste April 23-30 at the Solid Waste Facility at 424 River Road. Residents need to show proof of their address or face paying a fee.

The Lewiston facility accepts old furniture, carpeting, mattresses, old building materials such as plaster, plumbing fixtures, insulation, asphalt, wallboard, pipes, pressure-treated wood and metal conduits. The landfill also takes brush and tree waste, old appliances, including refrigerators, and up to seven televisions or computer monitors.

Lewiston will collect one truckload of brush per residence beginning April 24. That does not include larger stumps, fencing or wood from construction or demolitions.

All brush being collected must be at the curb, butt end facing the street, no later than April 24 and brush left out after the city has passed by will not be collected.

Auburn residents can bring old furniture, construction waste and brush to the Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. incinerator at 110 Goldthwaite Road. The cost to dispose of it is about 5 cents per pound year-round.

However, the city is accepting televisions and computer monitors, fluorescent bulbs and brush at the Public Works shop at 296 Gracelawn Road free of charge.

Both cities also participate in the Household Hazardous Waste Program, which lets residents drop off of up to 10 gallons of waste at the Lewiston Solid Waste Facility between May 7 and Oct. 15 on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

That program accepts a range of hazardous chemicals, including pesticides, solvents, brake and transmission fluids and swimming pool chemicals.
