SKOWHEGAN — An early trailblazer in Maine’s marijuana legalization movement says he and fellow pot advocates will be lighting up at the Somerset County courthouse in honor of Patriot’s Day.

The Morning Sentinel reports 62-year-old Donny Christen will take to the courthouse steps at “high noon” Monday for another chapter in a series of smoke-ins that he’s staged there over the years.

Law enforcement will keep a diligent eye on the demonstration, but Skowhegan Police Chief Don Bolduc says protesters can have their rally so long as they behave and refrain from blocking public space.

Bolduc added that he still believes marijuana is a gateway drug and he’s against legalizing it.

Christen was arrested for distributing marijuana-laced brownies at a Patriot’s Day rally several years ago.
