I would like to say a word before sentence is passed, was the request of the respondent in the Lewiston Municipal court, Thursday. He had pleaded guilty to subsisting on charity for some time past and thereby deemed to be a tramp. I have always worked out doors, he began, when allowed to address the court, and I would rather be sent to the house of correction instead of jail. He said that for all he had but one hand he could care for stock, handle a team and do most any work required. He was accordingly sentenced to 60 days in the house of correction.

The Lewiston-Auburn-Lisbon Area Metropolitan Economic Development Council, which a short time ago undertook an extensive, unique “Come Back Home” program in an effort to attract former residents back to the area, is pleased with the results thus far, it was reported today. William P. Tewhey, executive secretary of the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, which is coordinating the program, reported today that 52 letters accompanied by job application forms were mailed last Friday to people whose names had been submitted by relatives in the area and who now live in various other sections of the country.

A Bangor company says it has secured financing for a $61 million power plant at Livermore Falls that is expected to create as many as 200 construction jobs, some as soon as June or July. Alternative Energy Inc. has secured backing from “a major financial institution” to build the plant, which will burn waste wood to generate electricity, company president Christopher Hutchins said Thursday. He declined to identify the source of the money.
