MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council and Budget Committee each voted unanimously Thursday evening to send the $2.4 million municipal budget to voters for consideration June 14.

The action followed a public hearing that elicited no objections to the 2016-17 spending plan.

Last month, the two panels trimmed $5,500 from the Fire Department’s budget by putting off the purchase of an infrared camera to assist firemen in locating hot spots or people in buildings. It lowered the amount to be raised by property taxes by $21,000.

Councilman Wayne Hackett said that in March the two panels were under the impression an increase in the Regional School Unit 16 budget would likely mean Mechanic Falls would pay as much as $17,000 more. He asked if this was still the case.

Town Manager Koriene Low said the latest estimates show a $5,628 drop in Mechanic Falls’ assessment.

Budget Committee member Cathy Griffiths asked Fire Chief Fred Sturtevant whether he was desperate for a new infrared camera.

Sturtevant said he had no objection to seeing a lower tax bill and the department could probably get by another year. He said the department has two cameras, one of which is quite old.

“We were just trying to get ahead so we wouldn’t get caught short if the camera died on us,” Sturtevant said.

“We’ve done our job,” Councilman Lou Annance said after the votes by the two panels.

Budget Committee member Peter Ford agreed, noting that voters should be pleased to see property taxes going down, if only by a small amount.
