LIVERMORE — Voters at the June 15 town meeting will be asked whether they want to change the town clerk and treasurer positions from elected to appointed, Selectperson Megan Dion said Wednesday.
At a board meeting Monday night, citizen Brenda Merrill submitted two petitions asking that the questions be added to the town meeting warrant.
“It’s conducive to the town to make sure these are in the town meeting,” Merrill said. If not, a special town meeting would be needed to act on them, she said.
Merrill said the town clerk and treasurer shouldn’t have to run every two years and there should be accountability.
A few years ago a candidate was elected who wasn’t qualified and resigned shortly afterward, she said.
The town clerk and treasurer would be appointed by the Board of Selectpersons, according to Merrill’s petitions.
Her response to those who feel their vote would be taken away was: They vote for the five selectpersons responsible for overseeing the running of the Town Office, she said.
