LEWISTON — Second-grader Hailey Bellemare had a bad afternoon Saturday.

The 7-year-old was climbing a tree when her foot got stuck.

She wasn’t far from the ground, about 2 feet, but those watching her could not get her foot free. They called the Lewiston Fire Department. A firetruck and police responded to the Maple Street scene.

Within minutes, safety officials got Hailey’s foot loose. The girl leaned against a Lewiston police officer while a Lewiston firefighter pulled on her boot, prying her foot loose, said Lewiston Police Lt. Michael McGonagle.

Softly crying and standing on one foot, Hailey said her foot hurt.

When her mother, Mary Roy, got a call that her daughter was stuck in a tree, she visualized her up high. She was relieved to see her not far from the ground. Still, the girl was unable to get down.

“She was scared,” Roy said. “We’ll probably take her to the hospital to get her foot checked.”
