GREENE — The Araxine-Wilkins Sawyer Memorial, 371 Sawyer Road, will show Sandy Mortimer’s film “The Lure and Lore of Deserts” at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, May 13.

Admission is free.

The film shows the viewer that deserts are like people — each is unique, with its own look, feel and past.

The deserts of three Middle Eastern countries — Egypt, Israel and Jordan — have borne stories mankind holds sacred, places where it is said that God first spoke to man and where humans created magnificent structures to honor Him. While the magnitude of sands have done their part to obscure much of what they left behind, the film will sift through the past and present to visit those places.

In North America, the Sonoran, Mojave and Chihuahuan deserts also speak of those who were lured to them throughout the centuries, perhaps for much different reasons. While millions of tourists visit the well-known locations, the lore and legends of the little-known sites are still surprising stories waiting to be explored.
