NORWAY — Birders may join the Western Foothills Land Trust for its 29th annual bird walk at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Roberts Farm Preserve, 64 Roberts Road.
Seasoned birders Mary and Bob Van Nest, Jeff Chase and Cris DelCuore will provide guidance and competitive entertainment as participants walk through a variety of bird habitats at the preserve.
Migratory birds have just returned, a little late this year due to the cold spring. Birders generally identify between 25 and 40 species during the two-hour walk.
In past springs at Roberts Farm, birders identified numerous species such as the ovenbird, chestnut-sided warbler, black-throated green warbler, wood thrush, rose-breasted grosbeak, chickadee, black and white warbler, wild turkey, Canada goose, chipping sparrow, ruffed grouse, white-throated sparrow, black-throated blue warbler, blue jay, yellow-bellied sapsucker, common yellowthroat, veery, scarlet tanager, mourning dove, robin, blue-headed vireo, baltimore oriole, crow, pileated woodpecker and American redstart.
Participants should bring bird books, binoculars and bug spray. The walk will be held rain or shine, so birders should dress for the weather. Refreshments will be available, and donations are appreciated.
