MINOT — Town and school officials are investigating an apparent major water leak at the Minot Consolidated School.

“Consumption has increased from 20,000 gallons a month to 84,000 gallons a month,” Town Administrator Arlan Saunders told selectmen Monday evening.

Water for the school is pumped from a town well near the town garage. The amount is clocked monthly and Regional School Unit 16 is billed for it.

Saunders and Selectman Steve French, who is superintendent of the Mechanic Falls Water Department, checked the flow at the garage and the meter in the school basement Monday.

“It appears there is a leak at the school,” Saunders said.

“One theory is the boiler might have a leak and could be sending water right into the leach field,” he said.

Saunders said RSU 16 Director of Operations John Hawley and the school staff are working to help solve the problem.

French said he would continue his investigation.

In other business, Saunders also reported that the attorney defending the Androscoggin County Commission in a lawsuit brought by Androscoggin County towns has requested copies of all documents, emails, letters and other materials pertaining to the lawsuit.

“It appears they want to have all this information prior to entering into mediation,” Saunders said. “They want to know everything that went on — everything.”

Saunders also said he has scheduled a cemetery committee meeting for May 18 to discuss establishing a memorial garden at the Center Minot Hill cemetery.

Also Monday, selectmen:

• Agreed to retain the sliver of land off Brighton Hill Road and voted to abate $182.31 in property taxes. The land was formerly owned by Gary McFarland.

• Directed Saunders to set up a joint meeting of the Planning Board, selectmen and Code Enforcement Officer Ken Pratt for June 7 to discuss building permits.
