AUBURN — Democrat Bettyann Sheats has announced her campaign for the Maine House of Representatives, District 64, which includes Minot and part of Auburn.

The seat is held by Rep. David Sawicki, R-Auburn.

In a written statement, Sheats, a veteran, small-business owner and community volunteer, said her motto is “Listen, learn, lead.”

She graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was an Army helicopter pilot before moving to Auburn to raise a family. Since 2004, she has owned and operated Finishing Touches Shower Doors.

“My business allows me to talk with homeowners and other small business owners frequently,” according to her statement. “I have been listening to their concerns and challenges and I want to take their ideas to Augusta. Investing in local businesses should be an important part of any strategy to strengthen Maine’s economy and protect quality jobs,” according to her statement.

“I am on the Advisory Committee for St. Mary’s Food Pantry,” her statement said. “It is important to me that our programs offer a hand up, not just a handout. We have promoted stop-smoking classes, cooking classes, vegetable gardening, and other educational programs to break the cycle of hunger in our community. But while we work toward a solution, we must make sure no one in our community goes hungry. ”

She and her husband have two children in college and grad school.
