SALEM TOWNSHIP — The Regional School Unit 58 board of directors celebrated student and employee accomplishments Thursday night.

Superintendent Susan Pratt told the board and the audience of teachers and community members that Phillips Elementary School secretary Joan Haggan was treasured by her co-workers, students and administrators.

“Without Joan, our building would not function,” according to one of the comments in support of Haggan’s nomination for Employee of the Month. “She is the heart of our building.”

Principal Shelly Tranten recognized the top 11 students of the 2016 graduating class at Mt. Abram High School and shared their plans for after graduation. Most will attend Maine colleges.

“Don’t forget to come home,” board Chairwoman Kim Jordan said.

Pratt recognized Selina Warren, a second-grade teacher at Kingfield Elementary School, for her award as Franklin County Teacher of the Year. She was one of 15 Teachers of the Year honored by the Maine Department of Education and the nonprofit group Educate Maine. Warren will be among the contenders vying to represent the state at the national awards convention.

“I just want to thank all the parents and community members who supported me,” Warren said after receiving a standing ovation.

Board members also signed the warrant for the annual budget meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Mt. Abram High School. Residents of Strong, Phillips, Avon and Kingfield will have an opportunity to review the proposed 2016-17 spending plan and ask questions of the board.

Board members also began plans for training sessions for board members. Phillips and Kingfield will elect new directors in June.
