AUBURN — Two girls ages 13 and 14 were hurt early Saturday morning when one of them drove a van into a tree and parking sign on Court Street, police said.
According to an accident report, Lewiston police were pursuing a Ford van driven by Kylee Howe, 13, of Sabattus when she lost control and crashed at Court and Harris streets at about 1:40 a.m.
Police said Howe was summonsed to appear in court, although they couldn’t discuss the specific charges because she is a juvenile.
According to the report, Howe and her passenger, 14-year-old Emily Hinkley, were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston to be examined for possible injuries. Both were later released and turned over to their parents, police said.
Police said Howe had been driving south on Court Street when she failed to navigate a turn, lost control of the van and it struck a sign and a tree before rolling backward and stopping.
It was not clear why Lewiston police were following the van or where the pursuit began.
“It should be noted that Vehicle 1 was failing to stop for police,” the accident report notes.
The accident remained under investigation. The van, owned by Timothy Gamache of Lisbon, was towed from the scene.
