WELLS (AP) — Officials say it took rescue crews nearly three hours to extricate a box truck driver who was trapped inside the vehicle following a crash in Wells.

WMTW-TV reported (http://bit.ly/1WYjzYB ) authorities were alerted to the accident along state Route 9 around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday after the box truck left the roadway and slammed into a tree.

The driver, who wasn’t identified, was trapped inside the truck’s cab for hours before he was removed from the vehicle conscious and alert just after 9 p.m.

Fire officials say the victim was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Details on the man’s condition are unavailable, but fire officials say he’s expected to survive.

Maine State Police is investigating the cause of the crash.
