PARIS — The SAD 17 board of directors heard a presentation on a proposed Performance Evaluation and Professional Growth policy that it may enact at its meeting June 20.
The policy, which affects teachers and principals, is the outgrowth of legislation that requires school districts to establish requirements and implement them to measure the effectiveness of educators. It was presented by Assistant Superintendent Patrick Hartnett
A committee of local educators was established to develop the policy, which will look at four key areas for teachers. They include planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction and professional responsibilities.
Six areas will be evaluated for principals including professional growth and learning, student growth and achievement, school planning and progress, school culture, professional qualities and instructional leadership and stakeholder engagement and support. The process will include observations, peer visits, goal setting and other methods of evaluation.
Overall, administrators said the teaching staff has been supportive of the process.
Superintendent Rick Colpitts called the development of the policy “a huge project.” Once the board approves it, the policy will be submitted to the Maine Department of Education. The Personnel Committee will also make a recommendation on the final policy.
