Mayor Woodman of Bangor with an escort that will indicate the machine gun company, Mayor Viles of Augusta with an escort and Mayor Chapman of Portland running up for a few hours to meet the other mayors and the guests of the day, were among the plans announced Saturday from Mayor Brann’s office in connection with the July Fourth carnival. The mayor’s office was in telephonic communication with these three mayors Saturday and each sent congratulations to Lewiston for its spirit and will endeavor to come.
50 years ago, 1966
Anybody got a light? That was the case this morning at Edward Little High School and numerous other areas of Auburn as a power blackout doused the lights in a large section of the Shoe City. At Edward Little High School, members of the graduating class were preparing for Last Assembly when it happened. Candles and flashlights were brought out and dry cell batteries were in great demand. The assembly program, after a considerable delay, got underway inn the new gymnasium with the use of emergency lights and a battery powered public address system.
25 years ago, 1991
Seven Russian educators will arrive in the Rumford-Mexico area on July 4 to learn more about the community and its school system. While their specific interest is in learning more about school guidance and counseling, these educators have many questions about all aspects of the area’s educational system. Their stay is being arranged by David and Ann Morton of Hanover. The Russian educators and school board members will arrive in Maine in late June and spend nearly a month here.
