Both students began the test with physical requirements of 250 jumping jacks, 50 sit-ups and 25 push-ups. Then had to lead the class through basics, (punches, blocks, kicks). Followed by a brief announcement of their required community service project and an essay detailing their discoveries during their journey from white belt to black.
Beckett and Gwendolyn then had to lead the entire class through Kata (set memorized movements) from white to black belt level using correct Japanese terminology, as well as illustrate self-defense techniques, anti-bullying and stranger defense concepts, while exercising non-violent posturing and restraint.
Finally, both students had to spar (light contact fighting) against students of equal or greater rank for four minutes without rest. Both students are models for Phoenix Dojo precepts: Humility, Self Control, Integrity, Courtesy, Discipline, Perseverance, Compassion.
