FREEPORT (AP) — Voters in Freeport will decide whether they want to ban disposable plastic shopping bags.

A Tuesday referendum item will ask residents whether to ban the use of disposable plastic bags at supermarkets and convenience stores. The move also would place a five cent fee on paper bags.

The ban wouldn’t apply to non-food retailers and thus would not change the rules for L.L. Bean, which operates its flagship store in Freeport.

Freeport’s town clerk said last month that more than 600 people signed a petition in favor of the measure, which was more than enough to get the issue onto the ballot.

Voting will take place at Freeport High School from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
