How much is the Lewiston school budget?
$68.8 million, a 6.3 percent increase.
Why is it higher?
To pay for more teachers because there are more students — 250 more as of last fall — and more students who need special education services. Enrollment is 5,470 and it’s projected to reach 5,633 in the fall. Lewiston schools will get more money from the state next year because of more students.
What does Lewiston spend per pupil?
In 2014-15, it was $10,950. The state average is $12,551. Source: Maine Department of Education
What’s the impact on property taxes?
A property assessed at $150,000 will be taxed $34.50 more. However, because of savings in the city budget and a larger homestead exemption, a $150,000 property with a homestead exemption will see taxes drop by $101, from $3,856 to $3,755.
What if the budget is rejected?
The School Committee will revise it and bring it to voters later this summer.
