LEWISTON — Bates College’s annual Clean Sweep yard sale will be held Saturday, June 18, at the Lewiston Armory. Doors will open at 8 a.m.

The popular event, now in its 16th year, remains one of the largest community yard sales in Maine. More than 1,000 eager bargain hunters are expected to attend. Typically, the sale has raised $20,000 for participating nonprofits.

This year, John Murphy Homes was contracted to run the sale. In the past, the college held it on campus.

In April, Bates spokesman Kent Fischer said running the sale got to be too much for staff, and between the college graduation and class reunions the college needed to move it off campus.

In the past, multiple nonprofit organizations worked at the sale with Bates; this year, John F. Murphy Homes and several other nonprofit organizations are working the sale.

As in past years, the bulk of the items come from Bates College students — everything from dorm room furniture, to appliances, electronics, sports equipment, camping gear, rugs, clothing and kitchenware.

The sale has three goals, Fischer said: keep students’ used goods out of the landfill, hold a low-cost sale for the people of Lewiston-Auburn and donate all proceeds to local nonprofits.
