BUCKFIELD — Cheryl Coffman lost her bid Tuesday to stay on the Board of Selectmen, after two counts of the ballots had her one-vote short.
She received 72 votes and challenger Michael Iveson had 73, Town Manager Cindy Dunn said Wednesday. She called in both candidates and asked them to witness a second count because of the one-vote difference. The recount remained the same.
“Ironically, when Cheryl ran last time she ran with Glen Holmes. The difference in the initial count was one vote,” Dunn said. “It is kind of weird.”
It was a tie vote for the assessor position, with each candidate receiving 71 votes.
Dunn said she was unsure what would happen with that race.
“I am going to call legal counsel just to get the proper process,” she said. “I suspect we will need to call another election.”
“I am very pleased,” Iveson said Wednesday.
“I was surprised. I think Cheryl Coffman is a terrific person,” he said.
“I am looking forward to doing the best I can for this town, the new selectman said. “I have owned my house here since 1979 and I love the place. I am going to do everything I can to make it livable and more livable.”
Michelle Casey was re-elected to the Regional School Unit board of directors for a three-year term. She ran unopposed and received 129 votes.
