PORTLAND (AP) — A well-financed GOP candidate unofficially down by 55 votes in the first congressional primary race plans to request a recount.
Ande Smith, of North Yarmouth, said he’ll make his request Friday afternoon. The race is so close he doesn’t have to pay for a recount.
Opponent Mark Holbrook, of Brunswick, has declared victory. But Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap hasn’t named a winner, as results aren’t official until signed by the governor next month.
Holbrook said he has “full confidence” in the unofficial tally and said a recount won’t change the margin or outcome.
Smith’s campaign manager Patrick Marvin said there’s “no chance” Smith will change his mind.
Marvin said a recount will ensure “the results are accurate, and that the will of the voters is reflected in these results.”
