PERU — The Board of Selectmen on Monday agreed to grant conditional permission for the Peru ATV Riders to access the road from Main Street to the Woodstock-Peru town line near Concord Pond Road.

The board clarified following the vote that all-terrain vehicles cannot ride on Main Street or use it as an access route, and that the vote was pending approval from the Maine Department of Transportation.

Shane Amoroso, the treasurer for the Peru ATV Riders, said the club was working with the MDOT and the town of Mexico to build trails.

However, before moving forward with the trails, Amoroso said, the “first step was to get permission for an access route through town.”

“It’s 6.3 or 6.4 miles from Main Street to the Woodstock town line,” Amoroso said. “I already checked with the Woodstock ATV Club, and they said they have permission all the way to our town line, and always have.”

Selectman Carol Roach said she had spoken with Road Commissioner Lee Merrill, who told her there was “considerable work that needed to be done on Main Street with the pavement being chewed up and repaved.”

Roach said it would not be safe for ATV riders to travel on Main Street while that construction is going on.

Amoroso said he wasn’t planning on moving forward with the work until next spring.

He added that he was looking for the town to grant the club permission for road access “before I start doing a bunch of work with the state.”

He said the board could grant permission for road access conditionally if it wished.

Roach subsequently made a motion to allow the Peru ATV Riders road access from the Woodstock town line through Main Street, which was approved by a 5-0 vote.
