BUCKFIELD — Selectman Cheryl Coffman told the Board of Selectmen at its meeting Tuesday that she is conceding her seat on the Board of Assessors to Mike Iveson.

Coffman and Iveson each received 71 votes for the seat at the town meeting on June 18.

“I am withdrawing from the race,” Coffman said after Town Manager Cynthia Dunn informed the board of its options to break the tie. Coffman gave no other reason for her decision.

Dunn told selectmen their options were for one candidate to step down or have the board decide the date for a runoff election.

Iveson, who was in attendance, defeated Coffman for her selectman seat during the June 14 election by just one vote.

Selectman Maida Demers-Dobson was the only one to express opposition to Coffman’s decision. She said she preferred Coffman as assessor and that Iveson should withdraw.

Because Coffman announced her withdrawal first, the board had no choice but to accept it.

Coffman will need to submit a written letter formally announcing her withdrawal to the town manager to make the decision final.

The board’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 5. This will be Iveson’s first meeting as selectman.
