LIVERMORE FALLS — Newly elected Selectman George Cummings said at Tuesday’s selectmen meeting that he believed a recent survey of the fire station lot on Park Street was inaccurate.

“To the best of my knowledge, unless selectmen gave away a lot of land, the survey is off by 50 feet,” he said.

Selectman Ron Chadwick said that he had found a 1908 deed for the property, but the writing on it wasn’t legible. Cummings suggested having a company do a title search to determine the size of the lot.

“The thing is, if we’re going to build a fire station, I’d like to see it moved up the road and have the building turned south,” he said, referring to a vote by residents earlier that evening to build a new fire station on the lot.

Cummings pointed out that the structural problems with the fire station, which caused the building’s insurance to lapse and forced the Fire Department to move its equipment to other places in Livermore Falls and Jay, were known for years. Cummings blamed prior selectboards for not addressing the problems sooner.

“We’re not going to go back and talk about prior boards or anything of that nature,” chastised Chairman Louise Chabot.

Selectmen voted to hire George Parker as architect for the new building. When asked how long it would take for the building to be constructed, Parker responded that drawings would be done in early September.

“You’re probably going to be into next summer before you’re into the building,” he said.

Fire Chief Edward Hastings IV asked if it was possible to have a request for bid proposals with timelines.

“You can do it up to a point,” Parker responded.

“I’m advocating to get us back in the fire station as soon as possible,” said Hastings.

Selectmen also approved $2,250 to replace the brick walkways around the Town Office with asphalt. Town Manager Kristal Flagg said pavement would provide better traction than the bricks, which tend to get very slippery in wet or icy weather.
