Lewiston Falls never looked more beautiful or spectacular than today when we consider the season. The water is high and at West Pitch the torrent is fierce. It is certainly a great pity that there is no way by which this splendid scenery can be enjoyed by our people. O, for a park!

There’s an old adage that heat breeds bad tempers. Here’s proof of it. Yesterday a couple of youngsters down Danville way set themselves up in the refreshment business — selling homemade cool beverages. It was a good day for it — one of the hottest of the young summer season. But as will happen to partners now and then there was a disagreement. By next spring the $43 million waste-to-energy plant now under construction in Auburn should be fully operational, according to Neal Allen, executive director of Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. “We’re not sure exactly when, but the project is pretty much on schedule,” Allen said. “There will be a fairly lengthy start-up and acceptance period to bring the system on-line, and that can take a few months.” MMWAC, a consortium of 12 towns that have banded together to construct a state-of-the-art trash burning facility, broke ground for the project one year ago today. The new facility, which can burn 200 tons of trash a day, will replace a problem-plagued steam plant that never performed to specifications and was ultimately dismantled.
