LEWISTON — Former Lewiston Police Chief Bill Welch won’t seek a state Senate seat this year, he announced Wednesday.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Welch announced his decision to withdraw because of family and health issues.

“As a lot of you know my father is not doing well and is receiving hospice care at my home,” Welch wrote. “I also have other family medical issues that I just don’t allow me to campaign or to represent the people of Lewiston the way they deserve.”

Welch announced his intention in March to run as a Republican for District 21 against incumbent Democrat Nate Libby.

His withdrawal has local Republicans working to fill the space on the November ballot. Androscoggin County Party Chairwoman Patti Gagne said they have until July 20 to name someone.

“We are looking at all possible options in finding a replacement candidate,” Gagne said.

That involves talking to a lot of people, she said.

“We’d prefer a candidate that is really looking to keep up with our Constitution and holds the same republic views we have,” Gagne said. “We want a good conservative that is willing to work with others.”
