ERROL, N.H. — New Hampshire conservation officers say they plan to scale back their search for a missing canoer in Errol after efforts to find him have failed.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says dive teams suspended their search for 36-year-old Justin Smith, of Colebrook, on Friday but conservation officers will continue a limited search over the next couple of weeks.

Smith went canoeing with another man Wednesday afternoon in the Androscoggin River when their boat tipped over. Officials say the men weren’t wearing life jackets and struggled to stay above water. When they reached an area of rapids, officials say Smith went under water and never resurfaced. The other man was able to make it safely to shore.
