POLAND — Town Manager Bradley Plante told selectmen Tuesday that the handicapped-accessible lift at the Town Hall is out of service and has to be replaced.

Plante said it has been one problem after another for the 1980s device. So far, nearly $3,000 has been spent and it’s now difficult to get parts.

“We’re working on a permanent solution,” he said. “It could run us $35,000.”

Plante said ramp access to the lower level might be possible on the library side of the building.

Turning to the McConaghy-Walker house, scheduled for demolition this summer, Plante said the inspection for asbestos revealed that not only were pipes in the cellar wrapped in asbestos, but it appears wallboards in the kitchen and dining room will need special handling. Material containing asbestos must be removed prior to demolition.

Nine contractors attended a pre-bid meeting earlier in the day, Plante said, and accompanied him on a tour of the property.

“It was encouraging to see such a turnout. Bids are due back on July 22,” he said.

The large red house on Maine Street/Route 26 is between the Ricker Memorial Library and the old Town Hall. The town acquired the property three years ago as part of a master plan for a unified municipal complex.

The intent was to move the house. When no one came forward after nearly three years, selectmen asked residents whether they wanted to spend more than $100,000 to restore it or $30,000 to demolish it. The decision was to raze it.

In other business, selectmen awarded the contract for work on Herrick Valley and Johnson Hill roads to Shaw Bros. of Gorham for $118,382, the lowest of four bids.

Selectmen reappointed:

* Gerry Bowes to a five-year term on the Board of Appeals, with one regular and two alternate positions still vacant;

* Jeremy Storer to a three-year term on the Budget Committee;

* Fred Huntress to a three-year term on the Conservation Commission, with two vacancies remaining;

* Cyndi Robbins to a three-year term on the Community Economic & Development Committee, with two regular and two alternate positions still vacant; and

* George Greenwood to a three-term on the Planning Board, with one regular and two alternate vacancies remaining.

Other vacancies are a three-year seat on the Scholarship Committee and three one-year seats on the Ricker Memorial Library board of trustees.

Selectmen announced that Pat Nash has given notice she is resigning as health officer. Plante said she has held the job for 47 years and has served in several other capacities.

Selectmen appointed Nikki Pratt as health officer until Aug. 5, while Plante seeks a permanent replacement.
