LEWISTON — Two of four teens charged with shooting four deer at night and leaving them to waste in Franklin and Androscoggin counties last year have pleaded guilty to that charge.
The remaining two teens are juveniles and their records are not open to the public.
In November, wardens charged Zachary Black, 19, of Jay, Kyle Elliott, 19, of Fayette, and two 17-year-old males from Livermore with one count each of night hunting, which is a misdemeanor.
Black was later charged by indictment with two counts of hunting or possessing deer during closed season and wasting a wild animal, and a second charge of night hunting. He pleaded guilty to those charges in Lewiston District Court and was sentenced to serve 10 days in county jail. He was also ordered to perform 40 hours of community service and was fined $2,600.
As part of a plea deal, 11 additional charges, including hunting without a license, having a loaded firearm in a vehicle and using a light to hunt, were dismissed.
Elliott pleaded guilty to two charges of night hunting and hunting in closed season, and was sentenced to serve four days in the county jail. He was also ordered to serve 60 hours community service and fined $3,000.
As part of his plea deal, two additional counts of night hunting and a charge of cruelty to animals, and three counts of hunting in closed season were dismissed.
The four deer were does and are believed to have been killed at night in open fields in Chesterville, East Livermore village in Livermore Falls, Livermore and Leeds in April 2015.
At the time of the arrests, primary Warden Service investigator Dave Chabot said in a written statement, “This case proved very detrimental to Maine’s deer herd in that area. The public once again worked with us and provided very helpful information; we appreciate their help very much.”
The Warden Service began its investigation on April 22, 2015, when wardens responded to a complaint of an injured deer near the Bragdon Road/French Road and East Road in Chesterville. A deer was found in a field marked “No Trespassing” with a fatal gunshot wound to the spine. The doe was pregnant with twins.
Three more does were found: one off Route 106 in Leeds, one off Route 133 near Dodge Road in Livermore Falls, and one off River Road in Livermore.
Operation Game Thief offered a reward of up to $3,500 for anyone who could provide information leading to a conviction for those responsible in this case, which prompted a number of tips leading to the teens’ arrests.
