LISBON — The new $6 million Lisbon/Durham Bridge opened to traffic Monday, about a year earlier than expected, according to the Maine Department of Transportation. 

The bridge, originally built in 1936, carries Routes 9 and 125 over the Androscoggin River.

It has two 11-foot lanes, 5-foot shoulders and a 5-foot sidewalk along the upstream side of the bridge. It’s a major improvement over the original 22-foot-wide span, MDOT spokesman Tedd Talbot said in a news release.

Additionally, a $2 million project to improve Route 9 has been completed, realigning the lanes away from the sloped riverbank and improving sight lines.  

Wyman & Simpson of Richmond was the contractor for the project.
