PARIS — Authorities say they’re investigating a possible burglary and stabbing, after they found an elderly man semiconscious at the bottom of his basement stairs Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred before noon on Wednesday. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 12:08 p.m. from an 82-year-old man on Lynchville Loop who was going in and out of consciousness, according to a dispatcher.

When deputies arrived, they found the man struggling to crawl up his basement stairs.

According to Detective Joshua Wyman of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, the man told police a man broke into a second-story window, assaulted and stabbed him and threw him down a flight of stairs.

According to Wyman, the man said he struggled with the assailant before blacking out. The man said several books and documents had been stolen from the home.

The man was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where he was treated for superficial lacerations to the arms, Wyman said. Police did not locate the weapon used in the assault.

Police have interviewed a possible suspect in the case, a 64-year-old Albany Township man, who was not arrested.

The investigation is ongoing, Wyman said.

“We have no reason to believe the public is at risk at this time,” Wyman said.

Lynchville Loop is off Route 35.
