BUCKFIELD — Selectmen Warren Wright and Maida DeMers-Dobson approved the reappointment of Janet Iveson to the Economic Development Committee on Tuesday.

At the July 5 meeting, resident Vivian Wadas questioned the legality of Selectmen Mike Iveson taking part in the appointment of his wife.

That prompted DeMers-Dobson to withdrew her motion and the matter was tabled because Wight was not at the meeting. The board has three members.

Town Manager Cynthia Dunn sought legal advice on the issue.

Breana N. Gerson, staff attorney from the Maine Municipal Association, said that even though Maine does not have a law prohibiting nepotism, she suggested, “A selectboard member should probably disclose the fact that the person seeking appointment is a family member and refrain from discussing and voting on their appointment to avoid the appearance of impropriety.”

In other business Tuesday, the board:

* Decided to work individually on their thoughts about a survey request from the Maine Municipal Association on municipal issues and legislation ideas. The board will discuss their thoughts at the Aug. 2 meeting;

* Approved the lowest bid by Paris Farmers Union to supply the town with culverts for construction projects.
